What do Alice Cooper, Ozzy Osborne, and the Guys in the IT Department Have in Common?
Believe it or not, all qualify as "geeks." The term "geek" currently used to describe a computer expert or enthusiast was first defined in 1876 with the meaning "fool" and later also came to mean "a performer engaging in bizarre acts like biting the head off a live chicken." In 1969, Alice Cooper was rumored to have torn the head off a chicken (though it is not apparently true). In 1982, Ozzy Osborne bit the head off a real bat (by accident they say). Around 1984, people working in the IT field started referring to themselves as "geek." Today we see the term used everywhere we look, but it has come a long way from its original negative connotations. From the "Geek Squad" to the 61,300,000 results for it on Google, it can be easily be seen used as a term meaning technology expert.
