  SOA Business Value

Here is one of the many burning issues that have come out of the SOA discussion – IT organizations are assembling teams of architects with the goal of building architecture for the future that will be in place for the next 10-15 years. Most architects intuitively understand the value of building a SOA, but they are struggling with how to associate the business value of building it, and explaining that to the business managers who control the budgets and provide that little matter of funding for such initiatives. While there doesn’t seem to be one good answer that fits everyone, the various discussions seem to reduce it down to a few main points: Learn more!

Build Your Own Wizard

In the October issue, I described some of the new features in QAT Wizard 4.5.  Since then, I’ve been testing the new release and experiencing what we can accomplish with the product.  I’ve realized that this release is packed with so many new features and capabilities that it’s really more like a new product than an upgrade.

As I mentioned in the last article, this new release is intended for customers to create their own interviews and custom patterns.  The previous versions did not allow customers to create their own interviews.  This limited the amount of customization the customer could make to the pattern model.  In addition, the developer was only able to customize code using the available features and techniques in the Gen Action Diagram.  This release of the Wizard adds a new capability called Wizard Actions.  With that, let’s briefly explore a few of the new Wizard Actions.

What are Wizard Actions?
Wizard Actions are directives that you encode into the Action Diagrams using a combination of Notes and Action Diagram statements that direct the Wizard Plug-in to perform various customizations for you. The Wizard Actions start with a particular Action Diagram Note statement with a specified syntax. Some Wizard Actions require specific Gen statements to immediately follow the note in order to direct the Action at a specific view or other model object.  Learn more!

QAT ReFactor

Insider News: QAT ReFactor

If you develop in AllFusion® Gen like I do, I’d predict you’re often faced with the task of changing views and the associated code within action blocks.  Of course, if the views being changed are of the same type (i.e. they reference the same Work Set, Entity and Attribute), Gen provides a nice feature called Substitute View that will automatically change all the code to reference the new view.  However, if you are required to change existing code that references one view so it will reference an unlike view (i.e. a different Entity, Work Set or Attribute View), the Substitute View doesn’t help and you must manually modify every line of code.  This is a very common developer task and consumes countless hours during the development and maintenance of an application.

QAT ReFactor is a new plug-in for AllFusion® Gen that addresses those issues.  Learn more!
